Women in Muslim Countries Research

Survey research has a role to play in providing Muslim women with a public voice where custom and culture may not permit them their own.

D3 developed and sponsors the Women in Muslim Countries (WIMC) program. This multi-country, multi-wave study measures women’s empowerment in daily practice, providing a deep look into the oft-perceived gap between current public policy and empowerment initiatives and actual practice on the personal and local level.

The WIMC program currently contains data on over 20 countries, most of which have national stratified random samples to capture the attitudes, opinions, and behaviors of the female population as a whole. Numerous reports, publications, and presentations have utilized the WIMC data. D3 staff have applied advanced statistical methodology and theoretical frameworks to investigate long standing issues on women’s rights and development.
